Ways Fishing is Bad for the Environment
Humans consuming fish for food is as old as humans themselves. However, the demand for sea food continues to rise and therefore fishing in many places has become all about mass production. This is taking its toll on the delicate balance of ecosystems all around the globe. In some cases commercial fishing is depleting fish faster than they can reproduce. Thousands of tons of fish are removed from oceans daily. This is upsetting the natural food chain in oceanic ecosystems. Millions of boats have to be fueled daily to bring in millions of fish and this adds to the overload of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere, which adds more environmental problems to the earth as a whole. In addition, some of methods of fishing are more harmful than others. In some places dynamite is used to stun fish or even cyanide. This has negative effects on oceanic habitats. Also there is sea bottom trawling which disturbs the floor of the body of water, disturbing places where fish breed, lay eggs and find their food. There is a risk that humans could fish the ocean to it’s death if we are not careful. It’s certainly something that we should not ignore.
